About Gary Salmirs:<br/><br/>A graduate of the State University of New York at Oswego, Gary Salmirs dedicates his time to the Ironwill Foundation, a charity he founded in 2008. The Ironwill Foundation holds fundraisers to support research on rare but debilitating diseases that are largely ignored. At the Ironwill Foundation’s first event in June 2008, participants in a spin-a-thon raised over $70,000 to support research on Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease, an incurable genetic disorder that causes neuropathy and a loss of muscle tissue. <br/><br/>Additionally, Gary Salmirs’ organization educates low-income communities on health and nutrition through the Ironwill Wellness Program and Ironwill Community. Having suffered health problems in the past, Gary Salmirs started the Ironwill Wellness Program with the belief that every person deserves good health, regardless of social status or location. During the six-week course designed by Gary Salmirs and a team of medical and nutrition experts, students learn about a variety of topics such as good nutrition for children, easy, quick recipes for healthy meals, and the science behind food. <br/><br/>The program also provides exercise tips and information about women’s health issues. An assembly kitchen offers participants the opportunity to prepare food together to bring home to their families. After completion of Gary Salmirs’ Wellness Program, the Ironwill Community acts as a large support group for graduates. A regular participant in marathons and triathlons, Gary Salmirs began running to regain his fitness. He resides in New Jersey with his wife and three children.
