About me
Patrick Hamm is currently pursuing a doctoral degree at Harvard University. Mr. Hamm’s research interests include the effects of neoliberal political polices, such as privatization, on the economies and societies of post-communist countries, particularly Russia and China. A native of Germany, Mr. Patrick Hamm graduated cum laude from Yale University in 2004 with an undergraduate degree in Ethics, Politics, and Economics.

Whilea student at Yale, Mr. Hamm received the Richard U. Light Fellowship for Language Study twice, allowing him to devote two summers to study in China. In addition, Mr. Patrick Hamm was awarded a Jonathan Clark Summer Research Grant, and a junior fellowship at the Yale Center for Comparative Research. While an undergraduate, Patrick Hamm served as a research assistant to Prof. Lawrence King, and has since co-authored several research papers with him, including an article published in 2009 in the International Journal of Health Services. In this paper, titled “Rapid Large-Scale Privatization and Death Rates in Ex-Communist Countries: An Analysis of Stress-Related and Health System Mechanisms,” Patrick Hamm, Dr. King, and David Stuckler of Oxford University provide an in-depth analysis of the sharp rise in mortality rates experienced in post-communist countries, documenting the significant consequences of rapid privatization and other political policies.

Mr.Hamm’s dissertation is concerned with the political economy of food production in Russia and China. While at Harvard, Mr. Hamm has done research with Prof.. Lawrence King, as well as Professors Marty Whyte and Neil Gross. Mr. Hamm served as teaching fellow in introductory and advanced Sociology classes and as thesis adviser to undergraduates. Active in several sports, Mr. Hamm is a competitive rower and runner, and lives in Boston, Massachusetts.
