As Director of Athletics at the the University of Maryland, Debbie Yow has achieved new levels of success for 27 teams and more than 700 Terrapin student athletes, including 18 national championships. Known for her strategic management, Debbie Yow is the only current athletic director in NCAA Division I who hired a National Coach of the Year in basketball, National Coach of the Year in men’s basketball, and National Coach of the Year in football. Additionally, Debbie Yow’s leadership has resulted in recognition from several news authorities, including spots on Sports Illustrated and US News & World Report’s Top 20 athletic program lists. Debbie Yow started as a basketball coach before moving to athletics administration at the college level. Managing aspects of administration at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and the University of Florida, Debbie Yow achieved the position of Athletic Director at Saint Louis University. During her tenure as the Terrapin athletics director, Debbie Yow balanced athletics budgets while reducing debt. Additionally, Debbie Yow significantly developed fundraising and marketing strategies, which included new Internet applications. Debbie Yow’s efforts resulted in a 300 percent increase in corporate sponsorship revenues and a 350 percent increase in private gifts to athletics. With $250 million allocated to athletic facilities upgrades, Debbie Yow refurbished the university’s basketball venue, the Comcast Center. In addition to boosting development, Debbie Yow has focused on student-athlete success, implementing comprehensive academic support programs. Debbie Yow’s commitment to education has helped the Terrapins achieve the highest student-athlete graduation rate of any public higher education institution within the Atlantic Coast Conference.
