About us
Steve Loflin conceived of The National Society of Collegiate Scholars (NSCS) with some friends one evening at The George Washington University.Back then, Loflin was director of student activities. Over the next 15 years, The National Society of Collegiate Scholars grew to become the premier interdisciplinary honor society for high-achieving freshmen and sophomores. Today, over 230 colleges and universities across the United States house chapters of NSCS, representing all states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico.
Membership in The National Society of Collegiate Scholars is dependent upon three critical criteria: year in school, rank in class, and grade point average (GPA). Specifically, to gain admission into the NSCS, students must be either freshmen or sophomores in their schooling, rank in the top fifth of their graduating class, and possess a GPA of 3.4 or above. This standard for admission to the NSCS comes directly from the Association of College Honor Societies (ACHS), and the Board of Directors and staff of NSCS agree that the standards are worthy indicators of future achievement in applicants.
There are numerous reasons for students to join The National Society of Collegiate Scholars. NSCS believes in helping students succeed, and its members are eligible for more than $250,000 in scholarships. NSCS members enjoy discounts on college essentials like textbooks, and they have access to exclusive recruiting offers from NSCS’ corporate and graduate school partners. Most importantly, The National Society of Collegiate Scholars provides students with a way to celebrate their academic achievements, improve their leadership abilities, and participate on their campus and in their community in an organized way.
